At the end of August 2022, the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) known as “Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics” achieved an impressive result, gathering nearly 1.5 million signatures. This outcome underscores the strong support of European citizens for the request to strengthen and protect the ban on animal testing in the cosmetics sector. The initiative goes beyond the request to strengthen the existing ban, also calling for a transformation of the EU regulation on chemical substances to include clear information on the use or non-use of animal testing.
Unsuspectable brands that do experiments on animal for cosmetics reason
Despite the numerous awareness campaigns in recent years against animal testing in the cosmetics sector, unfortunately, this inhumane practice continues to persist. Organizations like PETA have compiled a list of well-known brands that still conduct animal testing for their beauty products, revealing even some seemingly unsuspected brands among them.
Some of these brands have shifted their production to countries like China or even the unsuspecting US, where animal welfare laws are less strict and enforced. This may be an attempt to circumvent European laws that prohibit animal testing for cosmetic products.
However, there is also a list of “ethical” brands that do not conduct animal testing for their products, made public by PETA as well. This list includes a wide range of beauty and cosmetic brands that opt for cruelty-free alternatives to test the efficacy and safety of their products.
Furthermore, the ECI demands that European institutions define a concrete plan for transitioning to the adoption of “non-animal science.” During a debate at the European Parliament, the Commission reiterated the importance of considering alternative methodologies. Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation at the EU, emphasized that these new methodologies must not only be evaluated but also accepted. However, the factors hindering this acceptance are numerous and complex, requiring further analysis.
